Rapid treatments for depression: Endocannabinoid system as a therapeutic target https://www.cannabisclinicians.org/2022/08/11/rapid-treatments-for-depression-endocannabinoid-system-as-a-therapeutic-target/ Thu, 11 Aug 2022 14:15:56 +0000 https://www.cannabisclinicians.org/?p=26656 Current first-line treatments for major depressive disorder (MDD), i.e., antidepressant drugs and psychotherapy, show delayed onset of therapeutic effect as late as 2–3 weeks or more. In the clinic, the speed of beginning of the actions of antidepressant drugs or other interventions is vital for many reasons.

Cannabidiol and Other Phytocannabinoids as Cancer Therapeutics https://www.cannabisclinicians.org/2022/08/11/cannabidiol-and-other-phytocannabinoids-as-cancer-therapeutics/ Thu, 11 Aug 2022 14:11:41 +0000 https://www.cannabisclinicians.org/?p=26654 Preclinical models provided ample evidence that cannabinoids are cytotoxic against cancer cells. Among the best studied phytocannabinoids, cannabidiol (CBD) is most promising for the treatment of cancer as it lacks the psychotomimetic properties of delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).

Marijuana and Myocardial Infarction in the UK Biobank Cohort https://www.cannabisclinicians.org/2022/08/11/marijuana-and-myocardial-infarction-in-the-uk-biobank-cohort/ Thu, 11 Aug 2022 14:04:22 +0000 https://www.cannabisclinicians.org/?p=26650 Atrial fibrillation, ventricular tachycardia, acute coronary syndromes, and cardiac arrest have been attributed to marijuana. But the National Academy of Science’s 2017 Report, The Health Effects of Cannabis and Cannabinoids, found limited evidence that acute marijuana smoking is positively associated with an increased risk of acute myocardial infarction, and uncovered no evidence to support or refute associations between any chronic effects of marijuana use and increased risk of myocardial infarct (MI).

The Dynamic Role of Microglia and the Endocannabinoid System in Neuroinflammation https://www.cannabisclinicians.org/2022/08/11/the-dynamic-role-of-microglia-and-the-endocannabinoid-system-in-neuroinflammation/ Thu, 11 Aug 2022 14:02:02 +0000 https://www.cannabisclinicians.org/?p=26648 Microglia, the resident immune cells of the brain, can take on a range of pro- or anti-inflammatory phenotypes to maintain homeostasis. However, the sustained activation of pro-inflammatory microglia can lead to a state of chronic neuroinflammation characterized by high concentrations of neurotoxic soluble factors throughout the brain.
